Why choose a Devon Rex for your pet?

History of the breed

The Devon Rex is a tall-eared, short-haired breed of cat that emerged in England during the late 1950s. The breed is known for its atypical appearance, with an oddly shaped head, large eyes, and the short and wavy coat.

Appearance

The Devon Rex is a short haired breed with a medium build and a unique head type which gives the breed a 'pixie-like' appearance. The head is short with a broad wedge and the brow curving to a flat skull. The eyes are large, set wide, and oval-shaped. Devon Rexes may have any eye colour. The ears are large and set wide apart with rounded tips. The coat is short dense and soft and curls inwards a little giving it a waved or rippled effect. Some areas of the body such as the neck may lack enough fur for the wave/ripple effect. The whiskers and eyebrows are crinkled and twisted. Devon Rexes may come in any colour.

Caring for your Devon Rex

Hand grooming is usually sufficient to keep their coats in good condition, but in some of the longer or
woollier coated cats grooming with a soft bristle brush and a fine tooth comb might be necessary to coax the coat into neat waves. It is usually necessary to bath the whites and bi-colours before a show as their white paws and underparts can become quite discoloured. Introduction to baths should begin when they are kittens to get them used to the procedure. Some Rex thoroughly enjoy water and will stand in the bath like a dog but to others it is a frightening experience.

Lifespan

The Devon Rex is a healthy, energetic breed. They can live for 10 to 15 years if they don't suffer from any life-threatening illnesses. You can ensure your Devon Rex cat lives longer by providing adequate care. That means feeding them a balanced diet, providing the space and environment for exercise, and visiting the vet regularly for routine check-ups.

The average lifespan of a Devon Rex cat is 10 to 15 years. But your cat can live longer with proper care, a healthy diet, and adequate exercise.

Stages of Life

Interestingly, Devon Rex cats never lose their kitten-like energy, even in their senior years. Their natural inclination to exercise helps keep health issues at bay, and many live up to their mid-teens.
